Technology research award for PhD students

A planned project award for doctoral researchers with a focused technology question.

The Pharos research route is being developed as supplementary support for a defined doctoral project. It is separate from university admission, a salaried PhD position and full funding for a doctorate.

Define the research contribution

State the research question before describing the system you want to build. Identify what is already known, the uncertainty your work addresses and the evidence that could resolve it.

Relevant project directions can include AI evaluation, distributed systems, software reliability, FinTech infrastructure and digital health technology. These examples describe preparation themes; the call will define the funded scope.

Prepare a project with a testable method

  1. Question and prior work

Name the question and the closest existing result. Explain the gap your project would investigate.

  2. Method and comparison

Describe the data, experiment or implementation. Choose a baseline and explain the evaluation criteria.

  3. Work plan and costs

Identify the tasks the proposed award would support. Link each requested cost to a research activity.

  4. Institutional arrangements

Identify your institution's grant contact and any approvals the work would need. Revisit those arrangements when the round requirements are published.

Build a project budget, not a full-degree budget

Questions for planning a doctoral project budget
Budget itemQuestion to answer
Compute or softwareWhich experiment requires it, and how is the cost estimated?
Data or research materialIs access permitted, and what does the project need?
Testing or evaluationWhat comparison or measurement will the expense support?
Institutional administrationWho can confirm how an external award would be received?

Permitted expenses, award value and the payment method have not been confirmed. This table is a planning aid, not an approved expense list.

Coordinate with your institution

Ask the relevant research or finance office how it handles external project awards. The final rules will explain whether funds go to an institution and which documents are needed.

You do not need to send unpublished research, a full thesis or personal financial records while the program is in preparation.

Scholarship questions

Answers about the planned scholarship and its preparation resources.

  • Will Pharos fund an entire PhD?

The planned route is a project award. It should not be treated as tuition coverage, a living stipend or a fully funded doctoral position.

  • Can I hold another scholarship at the same time?

The final Pharos rules will address concurrent funding. You will also need to check the conditions of your existing award and your institution.

  • Is a supervisor's letter required?

The application documents have not been confirmed. You can discuss the proposed project with your supervisor, but no letter needs to be submitted now.
