Sportsbook engineering around the betting lifecycle

Sportsbook software development covers the application that receives odds, accepts or rejects a bet and records its eventual settlement. Pharos builds platform components or modernizes an existing flow around the feeds, wallet and operating rules your business provides.

Our Gambit Stream Sportsbook case describes a betting engine, live-odds delivery, wallet functionality and operator risk controls. It also includes streaming-provider connections. Streaming is optional in a new engagement; provider rights and the operating model determine what belongs in the first release.

What we do not do
  • Feed and streaming rights, provider agreements and market permissions belong to the operator.
  • Trading policy, commercial outcomes and operating licenses are not software deliverables.
  • Wallet custody, payment processing and ongoing platform support require explicit responsibilities and scope.

The inputs that shape sportsbook delivery

  • Integration surface: Approved odds feeds, wallet interfaces, result sources and any streaming providers.
  • Betting rules: Supported markets, acceptance conditions, correction policies and operator permissions.
  • Migration boundary: Existing accounts, open bets and historical records that must remain consistent through rollout.
  • Estimate drivers: Provider behavior, supported bet types, transaction volume and the modules being replaced.

Extend a sportsbook or rebuild the platform?

The decision starts with the constraint you need to remove. A module project can preserve working components when their interfaces and ownership are clear.

Factor Focused module or integration Platform modernization
Starting problem A feed, betting step or operator tool needs a defined change. Several tightly coupled components prevent the required change.
Existing state Keep account and open-bet ownership with the current platform. Plan how accounts and unsettled bets cross the migration boundary.
Acceptance Prove the module contract and downstream effects. Also validate the full betting journey and cutover behavior.
Rollout Introduce the component through an agreed interface. Sequence releases around state continuity and operational recovery.

An illustrative bet-state acceptance matrix

Proposed test structure, not a Gambit Stream artifact. Track the bet identifier, accepted or rejected state, settlement result, wallet reference and reason for any correction.

  1. Odds change during placement

Place a bet while the feed updates the market. Check the operator-approved acceptance rule and the price recorded with an accepted bet. A displayed price and an accepted price should remain distinguishable when the request is rejected.

  2. A result message is repeated

Replay the same settlement event. Verify that it creates no second payout or duplicated state transition. Compare the recorded bet outcome with the wallet handoff rather than checking only the response shown to the user.

  3. Settlement is corrected or voided

Apply an agreed correction scenario after the original result. Trace the changed state and the corresponding wallet adjustment. Operator permissions and reason codes make the correction investigable.

  4. The feed or wallet connection fails

Interrupt the dependency, check the agreed suspended or pending behavior, then recover it. Reconcile affected bets before marking the workflow complete. Record which team owns unresolved external responses.

Sportsbook components to include in scope

  • Odds and market delivery
Connect approved feeds and map their updates to the market states the application uses. Agree what to show when a feed is stale or a market is suspended. Source timestamps and identifiers give operators a way to investigate the data behind a displayed price.
  • Bet acceptance and wallet handoff
Implement the supported bet flow against the operator rules and wallet contract. Keep rejected, accepted and pending outcomes explicit. Repeated requests and interrupted dependencies belong in the interface tests so an apparent UI success does not hide an unresolved transaction.
  • Settlement and correction behavior
Map result events to the bets they settle, with controlled paths for voids and corrections. Preserve a link between the original result and later adjustments. Reconciliation should expose exceptions to an owner instead of rewriting history without an explanation.
  • Operator tools and staged rollout
Give authorized staff the visibility needed to review market state, investigate transactions and apply agreed controls. Plan releases around the existing live state and recovery path. Wider gaming software development can include related product work; casino platform engineering has a separate game-round lifecycle.

Questions before a sportsbook engagement

Last updated:

  • Can you keep the odds and results providers we already use?

We assess their interfaces, permissions and update semantics before defining the adapter boundary. Include provider names and test access in discovery.

The software scope depends on what those contracts and feeds permit.

  • How do you migrate a platform with unsettled bets?

First identify the system that owns each open bet and the records needed to finish its lifecycle. Agree a cutover path and reconciliation before changing that ownership.

A redesign of the user interface alone does not settle the migration question.

  • Do we need streaming in the first release?

Only when it is part of the intended product and the operator has the necessary provider rights. It adds a separate connection and user experience to test.

The betting journey can be scoped independently of streaming.

  • Who defines the risk controls and acceptance rules?

The operator supplies its trading and risk policy. Engineering implements the approved controls, permissions and audit behavior.

Discovery needs an operational owner who can resolve rule conflicts and sign off the scenarios.
