A rewards platform with an explainable balance lifecycle

Loyalty software development turns approved program rules into the reward transactions customers and partners use. Pharos builds the ledger, earn and redeem workflows, partner interfaces and customer/admin experiences around those rules.

Our Dostyq case describes a shared wallet for bonuses, gift certificates and cashback, with transfers, retailer connections and partner dashboards. It demonstrates the platform and integration scope. A new program still needs its own rule owners, transaction model and responsibilities for resolving balance disputes.

What we do not do
  • Program strategy, reward funding and financial treatment are client decisions.
  • A complete CRM replacement and marketing campaign services are separate offers.
  • Cash movement, transferable value and payment features require explicit commercial and operational scoping.

Inputs for a loyalty platform estimate

  • Reward model: Points, bonuses, certificates or cashback, with eligibility and redemption rules defined.
  • Event sources: POS, commerce or partner APIs and the identifiers used to detect repeated transactions.
  • Lifecycle: Earning, reservation or redemption, refund treatment and any agreed expiration behavior.
  • Estimate drivers: Program rules, partner interfaces, legacy balances and customer/admin channels.

Configure a loyalty product or develop a custom platform?

Use an existing product when its rules and integration boundaries fit. Custom development needs a specific lifecycle or partner operating model that the available product cannot represent.

Factor Configure an available product Develop a custom platform
Program rules The supported rule model represents your earn/redeem policy. Partner or reward lifecycles need application-specific logic.
Partner access Existing connectors cover the event and redemption sources. Build adapters for the actual POS and commerce contracts.
Balance ownership Accept the product ledger and its reporting model. Define your ledger, exception ownership and reconciliation.
Migration Import balances through the product-supported path. Validate legacy history and state against the custom contract.

A sample reward lifecycle acceptance checklist

Illustrative structure, not a Dostyq artifact. Track the partner event, applicable rule, reward entry, resulting balance and the reversal or exception path.

  1. A purchase event arrives twice

Repeat an earning event with the same partner reference. Check that it creates one intended reward entry. A new legitimate purchase must remain distinguishable from a delivery retry so deduplication does not erase customer activity.

  2. Redemption is interrupted

Start a redemption, then interrupt the partner response. Verify the agreed reserved, completed or released state and the customer-visible balance. Reconcile the result before allowing an unresolved operation to disappear.

  3. A purchase is refunded

Apply the program rule for a full or partial return using approved fixtures. Trace the reversal to the original earning event and check how already spent rewards are treated. The program owner approves that policy.

  4. Rewards expire or an adjustment is made

Test the stated expiration rule and a permitted staff adjustment. Keep the reason and actor in the history. Compare partner reports with the ledger and route unexplained differences to an operational owner.

Loyalty platform components to implement

  • Reward rules and transaction ledger
Translate approved earning and redemption conditions into a recordable lifecycle. Keep each balance change tied to the event and rule that produced it. Rules for refunds and expiration are explicit decisions, so the customer view and the back-office explanation stay aligned.
  • Partner and POS adapters
Connect the actual purchase and redemption interfaces partners provide. Preserve event references and establish retry behavior. When a partner works offline or exposes a limited legacy interface, agree the reconciliation path before promising a real-time customer experience.
  • Customer wallet and history
Show available rewards and the actions the customer is allowed to take. Distinguish pending from completed redemption where the partner contract requires it. Transfers and gift certificates can be selected as modules, each with its own program rules and exception handling.
  • Program administration and reconciliation
Give authorized staff tools to inspect activity, manage agreed offers and explain adjustments. Identify unmatched partner events and disputed balances for review. Link the program to an existing CRM or commerce platform without turning this scope into a full replacement.

Questions before scoping a rewards platform

Last updated:

  • How is loyalty development different from CRM development?

A CRM manages customer relationships and communication. This offer implements reward transactions and their balances.

The systems can exchange approved customer and program events, but a reward ledger should remain identifiable rather than become an incidental CRM field.

  • Can we keep our existing POS and commerce systems?

We review the event and redemption interfaces they expose. Legacy terminals or offline operations need an explicit integration path and recovery behavior.

Include system names and partner access when defining the first release.

  • Can customers transfer rewards or certificates?

That is an optional program rule, not a default feature. Specify which value can move, who is eligible and what happens to expiration or refund rights after a transfer.

Dostyq is a delivery example; its program terms are not inherited by yours.

  • How do we bring existing balances into the new platform?

Define the source of each balance and the history needed to explain it. Validate the import and agree a reconciliation/cutover with the program owner.

Migration should also name the process for disputes and balances that cannot be matched confidently.
