Overview of the Project
-
The Challenge: Replacing a Legacy Sportsbook Under Load
The client’s legacy sportsbook was built on a monolithic architecture that could not handle real-time odds updates or scale during major sporting events. Page load times exceeded 4 seconds, odds refresh required manual polling and the back-office settlement process consumed over 50% of operational staff time. With 25,000+ concurrent users expected during peak events and 12,000+ bets per minute to process, the existing system was a growth bottleneck. Gambit Stream needed a modern platform built for speed, stability and scale.
-
Goals for the New Sportsbook Solution
The primary goals were clear:
- Build a dependable betting engine with real-time odds.
- Connect live streams directly to betting features.
- Create a seamless experience for both end-users and operators.
-
Why Gambit Stream Chose Pharos Production
We brought a team with direct experience building blockchain, gaming and high-traffic betting platforms. Our methodology started with a full performance audit of the legacy system, followed by a phased migration strategy that kept the sportsbook operational throughout the rebuild. We combined real-time WebSocket architecture for live odds with an automated risk management engine – delivering both the user-facing speed and back-office efficiency the client needed.
Technology Stack
-
Backend Technologies
At its core, the platform runs on Java with Spring Boot, providing a stable and flexible foundation for sportsbook logic. Apache Kafka enables event streaming, ensuring bets and odds are processed in real time without delays. Apache Flink manages data pipelines, analyzing live streams of betting events and user activity.
-
Frontend Framework
The user-facing side was built with a modern React framework, optimized for quick load times and smooth interactions. This makes live betting and streaming features feel instant and reliable, even during heavy traffic.
-
Database and Infrastructure
For data storage, we chose Apache Cassandra, which is ideal for managing large volumes of real-time betting data with high availability. Everything runs on Kubernetes, with Istio providing traffic management, scaling, and resilience.
-
Integrations and Third-Party Services
The platform integrates smoothly with live video streaming providers and secure payment gateways. On the operator side, we connected analytics and monitoring tools so Gambit Stream can monitor performance and respond quickly.
Key Features
-
Real-Time Betting Engine
The core engine handles thousands of bets every second with very low delay. Odds update instantly, keeping players engaged and operators confident in system stability.
-
Live Streaming Integration
Bettors can watch matches and place bets directly on the platform. Live video is synchronized with betting markets, delivering a seamless all-in-one experience.
-
User Account and Wallet System
We developed a secure account system with quick deposits, withdrawals, and wallet management. Players experience a smooth process from registration to betting.
-
Risk Management Tools
Operators have integrated controls to identify suspicious patterns, control exposure, and ensure fair betting. Automation minimizes manual effort while enhancing security.
-
Admin Panel and Analytics Dashboard
An easy-to-use admin panel gives staff complete visibility into activity. The dashboard provides real-time analytics, helping Gambit Stream adjust odds, monitor performance, and make data-driven decisions.
Business Results
-
How We Achieved 68% First-Session Betting Conversion
We designed an onboarding flow that gets bettors from registration to first wager in under 2 minutes. Our streamlined interface with quick-bet options achieved 68% first-session betting conversion – proving that reducing friction directly translates to revenue.
-
How We Built for 25,000+ Concurrent Users at Sub-30ms Latency
We delivered real-time odds delivery with sub-30ms latency that keeps bettors engaged during live events. Our platform serves 25,000+ concurrent users during major sporting events and processes 12,000+ bets per minute – handling the load that made the previous system buckle.
-
How We Reduced Back-Office Workload by 58%
We built centralized dashboards, automated settlement and real-time reporting that reduced back-office workload by 58%. Our risk management algorithms process 500+ odds adjustments per second across all active markets – giving the operations team confidence and control without manual intervention.
-
Scalable Foundation for Future Expansion
Event-driven microservices maintain 99.95% uptime including during Champions League and World Cup peaks. New sports and markets deploy within 24 hours without platform restarts.
Project Outcome
Reduced stream startup time from 4.2s to 0.9s and increased concurrent viewers per node from 1200 to 8500 while cutting bandwidth cost per viewer hour from $0.14 to $0.038. Measured against pre-optimization baseline on the same workload.
