Engineering insight How we built Pleenk's PCI DSS-compliant payment platform

When Pleenk needed a payment platform processing card transactions across multiple currencies, the core challenge was achieving PCI DSS Level 1 compliance without sacrificing development speed. Our approach: isolate the cardholder data environment (CDE) into a dedicated microservice with its own encrypted database, separate from the main application. Card numbers never touch the application server - they flow directly from the client to the tokenization service via TLS 1.3, returning a non-reversible token that the application uses for subsequent operations. We implemented point-to-point encryption (P2PE) for all card-present transactions and tokenization for card-not-present flows. The payment service handles 50K+ daily transactions with 99.95% uptime, automatic failover across two availability zones and real-time fraud scoring on every transaction.
